Record-Breaking Mega 50/50 Jackpot Supports Cardiac Care Across Northern BC

Prince George, BC – The Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation is sending heartfelt thanks to the Prince George community following the record-breaking Mega 50/50 draw held during Retro Night on March 22 at the CN Centre. In a thrilling matchup against the Victoria Royals, which also marked the final regular season game for the Prince George Cougars before the playoffs begin on March 28, fans showed up in force—raising the largest 50/50 jackpot in franchise history, surpassing an incredible $200,000. One lucky fan in attendance took home half the pot, while the remaining proceeds will directly support cardiac care enhancements at UHNBC and across the northern region.

Heart disease continues to be the second leading cause of death in Canada, and timely access to diagnosis and treatment can be life-saving. Investments in cardiac care are essential for a region as vast and rural as northern BC, where travel and access barriers are a constant challenge. Spirit of the North is proud to have played a lead role in the establishment of the North’s first dedicated cardiac care unit, which officially opened at UHNBC in December 2023. Funds raised through initiatives like the Mega 50/50 will continue to strengthen this service and ensure patients from across the region receive the specialized care they need, close to home.

'“We are beyond grateful to the Prince George Cougars for their unwavering partnership and their dedication to health care in our region,” said Aimee Cassie, CEO of Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. “This record-breaking 50/50 was not only a fun and exciting way to cap off the regular season, but it also highlighted how deeply this community cares about health care. Thank you to everyone who purchased a ticket, and to those who shared their personal stories about the importance of cardiac care—your support is making a real difference across the North.”
