Creating a More Supportive Space for Youth at UHNBC

Recent upgrades to the Adolescent Psychiatric Assessment Unit (APAU) at UHNBC are helping create a safer, more therapeutic, and more welcoming environment for young people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

These improvements were made with a clear goal: to ensure youth receive care in a space that supports comfort, dignity, and healing; not just clinically, but emotionally as well.

Families have already shared how meaningful it is to see their children in an environment that feels warm and supportive. Youth themselves have expressed feeling more at ease, more respected, and more able to engage in their own care.

As one staff member shared:

“Families have shared how meaningful it is to see their children in a space that feels warm and supportive. Youth have expressed feeling more at ease, more respected, and more able to engage in their own care. These changes have not only improved the physical environment, but have also enhanced emotional well-being to those who walk through our doors.”

This project was made possible through the collaboration of APAU staff at UHNBC and the generosity of donors across the region.

This is the impact of community support—ensuring young people receive care in environments designed to support their well-being, every step of the way.
